The Cub Scouts of Pack 80 are asking for your help to feed the hungry in our community. Due to the bad economy, many children and families are going to bed hungry right here in our home towns. Somerville Scouts will once again be participating in the “Scouting for Food” initiative that will benefit the Somerset County Food Bank. The Scouts will be distributing collection bags the weekend on November 14th and would greatly appreciate your generous donation of nonperishable food items.Donations will be collected on Saturday, November 21st. Please place your donations on your doorstep in clear view from the street before 9AM. Items needed include: canned goods like vegetables, stew, beans, and tuna and dry goods like pasta, cereal, and rice. Please do not give expired items or glass containers. Patriots' Path Council, BSA proudly provides continuing support to the National Scouting for Food Good Turn. This program embodies one the highest ideals of Scouting—service to the community—by meeting the local needs of the hungry through the practical application of the “Daily Good Turn.” Scouting for Food is a year round national initiative that cumulatively collects millions of pounds of food for the hungry across the country. Locally, Patriots Path Council coordinates food collection and identifies legitimate community agencies to warehouse and distribute the food items collected to the needy at no cost. |

One of the pillars of Scouting is the idea of service to others. The American scouting program was started after an American, visiting England, was assisted by a ‘boy scout’ who helped him and refused any reward or tip for his service. The American was so impressed that he decided to form a scouting program in the United States. That is the beginning of what we now know as the Boy Scouts of America. Pack 80 has several events during the year to help all of our scouts fulfill the idea that part of scouting is service to others. We will have two parade marches, two flag placements for veteran gravesites at Somerville’s New Cemetery, we gather food for local food banks, and go Christmas caroling at a local senior citizens nursing home, along with several other activities. All events do not have to be attended by every scout, but we do strongly encourage each scout to participate in at least four events for the year. NOVEMBER COMMUNITY SERVICE: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7th We will be working with the American Legion to do flag placements on Veteran grave sites in preparation for Veterans Day starting at 8am. This takes about an hour for the scouts to replace all the worn out flags with fresh ones supplied by the American Legion. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH, ‘Scouting for Food’ program. We will be dropping off collection bags to assigned residential areas in Somerville. The following SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21st, we will be going back to the same neighborhoods to collect the donated foods and bring them to the local food bank in Bridgewater. Both the drop off and collection usually takes about 1 hour each. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 908-575-0596. Thanks, Larry Cleveland Pack 80 Community Service Chairperson |
